Neighbourhood Presence /

GCBC seeks to be attentive to the people whose lives are established in the Grandview-Woodlands neighbourhood we all share. A number of initiatives of GCBC or through partnering organizations help us embody Christ’s love here.

Crossroads Community Project
Crossroads welcomes society's marginalized; nurtures spiritual, physical, emotional and social growth within ourselves and those we befriend; promotes fair and unprejudiced treatment of our friends; advocates for change of the unjust structures of society; makes space for creative endeavors in our community; and loves our neighbours through concrete actions, including:

  • Out of the Cold - free meal & overnight stay
  • Computer Lab - Internet & computer use
  • Community Outreach - making connections on the street
  • Health & Hygiene Initiatives - laundry, storage, nursing care, et al.
  • Community connections with related groups, including the Grandview Woodlands Drug & Alcohol Coalition, JustWork and Salsbury Community Society (see below).

Crossroads seeks to deepen friendships with those on the streets, preparing more welcoming spaces in our homes and neighborhood. For more info and/or to learn how to get involved please call Karl at 604.253.6667 or email: crossroads@gcbchurch.ca.

The Open Door for Single Mothers
Wednesdays, 9:30 am – 1 pm, during the school year
The Open Door provides opportunity for single mothers with pre-school children to receive free child care, a hot lunch and support. Children receive licensed care while mothers take a break, spend time running errands, or gather to learn about Christian faith by participating in a Bible Study.

Salsbury Community Society (SCS)
SCS is a community of locally rooted initiatives (Co:Here, Kinbrace, REED, Stillpointe, JustWork, and Crossroads) committed to the welcome and support of vulnerable people in the radical tradition of Christ. We are an offshoot of the faith community of GCBC. See www.salsburycommunitysociety.ca.

Kinbrace House
The Kinbrace Community welcomes refugee claimants new to Vancouver by providing housing, support, and advocacy through relationships and hospitality. See www.salsburycommunitysociety.ca/meet-our-family/kinbrace.html

JustWork Economic Initiative (JW)
JW’s mission is to foster dignified, gainful employment for individuals facing major barriers to employment. Currently, JW supports two social enterprises (businesses pursuing social goals) as a means of providing employment for those in our midst unable to find work. These two enterprises are: JustGarden and JustPotters. Over time we hope these social enterprises will provide participants with crucial income, improved life skills, and new ways to address employment barriers.Go to JustWork website www.justwork.ca

JustGarden
As an organic landscape gardening company, JustGarden provides meaningful work as gardeners to people with barriers to employment. Working with a small group of people on a long-term basis, JustGarden stewards creation as it stewards relationships and the gift of work.

The Pottery Studio
The ceramics studio in the GCBC basement (known as The Potter's House or JustPotters) welcomes people from the neighbourhood who would otherwise not have access to a creative studio space, due to economic or social barriers. The studio provides studio space, instruction, support and employment opportunities through pottery making. The studio is committed to: community building, acceptance, creativity, healing, and dignity. The studio hosts regular weekly drop-in times. For more information contact 604-255-4790.
